Accuracy and timeliness
We try to keep pages current, and the "Last reviewed" date at the top of each page reflects the last time we checked the content. Even so:
- Laws change frequently, especially at the state level. A rule that was accurate on the review date may have changed since.
- Statutes, regulations, and case law are written for legal practitioners; plain-English summaries necessarily simplify and generalise.
- Procedures, forms, and filing fees vary between states, counties, and courts.
Always verify time-sensitive information against official sources — the relevant state or federal court, agency, or statute book — before acting on it.
Calculators and estimators
The calculators on the site (such as the personal injury settlement estimator and the child support estimator) produce illustrative ranges based on commonly used formulas. They are not appraisals, valuations, or guarantees. Real-world numbers depend on facts the calculators cannot see — including a court's judgment, opposing counsel's strategy, the strength of evidence, and applicable state-specific guidelines. Treat any calculator output as a starting point for a conversation, not a result.
Jurisdiction
The site focuses on US law. Most pages cover federal law or rules from one or more US states. The site is not a guide to non-US legal systems, and US legal concepts often have only loose equivalents elsewhere. If you are outside the United States, do not assume that a US rule applies to your situation.
Statutes of limitations and other deadlines
Many legal rights are limited by strict deadlines. Reading a page about a deadline is not the same as preserving the right. If you think you may have a claim, contact a licensed attorney promptly. We are not responsible for any deadline missed by readers who relied on the site instead of seeking professional advice.
