1. Scope and the short version
This policy applies to legalkb.com and to any subdomain we operate. It does not apply to third-party sites we link to.
The short version: LegalKB is an information site. We do not require you to register, log in, or create a profile to read any page. The data we end up handling comes mostly from your browser (standard server logs), from the analytics tools we run, and from the advertising networks we use to keep the site free.
2. What we collect
Information collected automatically
When you visit, your browser sends standard request information that we (or our hosting and CDN providers) record in server logs:
- IP address (in some cases truncated or anonymised by analytics tools).
- Browser type, version, language, and operating system.
- The page you requested and the page you came from (HTTP referrer).
- Date and time of the request.
- Approximate location derived from your IP address (typically country and region).
- Device characteristics such as screen size, used by the layout to render correctly.
Information collected through cookies and tags
Our analytics and advertising partners place cookies and similar identifiers in your browser. The data they collect is described in section 4 and the Cookie Policy.
Information you provide voluntarily
If you email us at one of the addresses on the contact page, we receive whatever you choose to include in that message. We also receive any data you submit to the calculators on the site, but those tools run entirely in your browser — we do not store calculator inputs on our servers.
3. How we use it
We process the data above to:
- Operate the site, deliver pages, and keep it secure (preventing abuse, spam, and bots).
- Understand how readers find and use the site so we can improve content and navigation.
- Show advertising that funds the site, and measure whether ads work.
- Respond to messages you send us.
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
Under GDPR, our legal bases for processing are: legitimate interests (running and improving the site, basic security), consent (where required for non-essential cookies and personalised advertising), and compliance with legal obligations.
4. Cookies and similar technologies
A cookie is a small text file that a site or one of its partners stores in your browser. We use a small number of cookie categories:
- Strictly necessary — keep the site functioning (load balancing, security tokens). These do not require consent.
- Analytics — Google Analytics 4 cookies that measure aggregated traffic patterns.
- Advertising — cookies set by Google AdSense and its ad partners to deliver, frequency-cap, and measure ads, including personalised ads where permitted.
You can refuse or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings. Refusing cookies will not break LegalKB, but it may make the ads you see less relevant. The Cookie Policy explains the categories in more detail and includes opt-out links.
5. Google AdSense and advertising
LegalKB displays ads served by Google AdSense, a service operated by Google LLC. To display these ads, Google and its ad-tech partners may set cookies, read existing cookies, and use device identifiers in your browser. Together, these technologies allow Google to:
- Serve ads based on prior visits to LegalKB and other websites on the internet (personalised advertising, where allowed by your jurisdiction and your settings).
- Cap how often the same ad is shown to you.
- Measure ad performance, including impressions, clicks, and conversions.
- Detect invalid clicks and other forms of ad fraud.
Google's use of advertising cookies — including the DoubleClick / Google ad cookie — enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visits to this site and other sites on the Internet. You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ad Settings. You can opt out of personalised ads from many other vendors at aboutads.info/choices (US) or youronlinechoices.com (EU/UK).
Google's own privacy practices are described in the Google advertising policies and Google Privacy Policy. If you are in a jurisdiction with consent requirements (such as the EEA, UK, or Switzerland), Google's consent management tools will ask for your permission before serving personalised ads.
Some advertisers are third-party vendors participating in Google's ad network. A current list of these vendors and their privacy policies is available through Google's certified ad-technology providers.
6. Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate traffic patterns — which pages are read, how readers arrive, how long they stay. Analytics cookies do not identify you by name. Where applicable, we enable IP anonymisation. Analytics data is retained for the period set in our Google Analytics property (currently 26 months) and then deleted.
You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, by blocking analytics cookies in your browser, or by withdrawing consent through any consent banner shown on the site.
7. Third-party services we use
The site relies on a small number of third-party services to function and to fund itself:
- Google AdSense and Google Ad Manager — advertising. See section 5.
- Google Analytics 4 — usage analytics. See section 6.
- Hosting and CDN — to serve pages globally and protect against abuse. The provider receives request metadata to deliver content and apply security rules.
Each of these providers is independently responsible for the data it collects. Their privacy policies govern that data, and we link to them where applicable.
8. When we share information
We do not sell personal information. We share data only with:
- The service providers above, strictly as needed to run the site.
- Authorities, where required by law (subpoena, court order, or comparable legal obligation).
- Successors, in the event of a corporate change such as a merger or acquisition. Any successor would be bound by this policy.
9. How long we keep data
- Server logs: up to 90 days, for security and abuse prevention.
- Analytics data: per the retention period configured in Google Analytics (currently 26 months).
- Email correspondence: as long as needed to handle the request and comply with legal record-keeping, then deleted on a routine cadence.
10. Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect data, including HTTPS for all traffic, restricted administrative access, and use of reputable hosting and analytics providers. No internet transmission is ever 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Your rights (GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA)
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
- Delete personal information we no longer need.
- Restrict or object to certain processing, including direct marketing and personalised advertising.
- Receive a portable copy of your data.
- Withdraw consent at any time, where we relied on it.
- Lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
California residents have specific rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), including the right to know what personal information has been collected, the right to delete, the right to correct, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not sell personal information for monetary value, but the use of advertising cookies described in section 5 may qualify as "sharing" under California law. To opt out, use the controls described in section 5 and adjust your browser cookie preferences.
To exercise any right, email privacy@legalkb.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request. We respond within the timeframes required by applicable law (typically 30 days under GDPR, 45 days under CCPA).
12. Children
LegalKB is intended for adult readers. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in jurisdictions that apply that threshold). If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact privacy@legalkb.com and we will delete it.
13. Do Not Track and global signals
We honour Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals where applicable to opt out of the "sharing" of personal information for personalised advertising. We do not currently respond to legacy Do Not Track headers, since they have no agreed meaning across the industry.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last reviewed" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be highlighted on the homepage for a reasonable period.
15. Contact
For privacy questions or to exercise any of the rights above, email privacy@legalkb.com. For general questions, see the contact page.
